Homogentisic acid (2,5-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid) has carboxylic acid on side chain rather than directly on ring. Still qualifies under HTS 2918.19.20.00 per note 3 for aromatic compounds with alcohol function. Important in metabolic disorder research (alkaptonuria).
