Red mercuric iodide crystals are used in thermometers, infrared detectors, and as a chemical reagent. It qualifies as a chemically defined mercury compound under subheading note for 2852.10, but as iodide primarily in 2827.60.51.00. The scarlet tetragonal crystals sublime at 350°C.
