Abietic acid powder is the primary resin acid component of rosin, isolated and purified for use in pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. It constitutes 30-50% of natural rosin and is a separate chemically defined compound. Under Chapter 38 Note 1(a), separate chemically defined elements or compounds are excluded from this chapter unless specifically listed; however, abietic acid is a resin acid and falls under heading 38.06 as a resin acid, which is not excluded by the note.
